I am particularly proud of securing this hands-on work experience. While on a court date with PLP and Associates, I was asked to introduce myself and present my learnings of the day's session to the presiding Justice of the Peace after bail court had adjourned. After speaking before the bench in front of both defence counsel and the prosecution, I was commended for my ad hoc presentation and grasp on the legal principles. As a result I was able to meet with the assistant head crown attorney in charge of our defendant's prosecution and secure a shadowing role for a week.
During this week I was assigned a copy of the prosecution file for a domestic violence repeat offender. By the end of the week I was asked to provide a list of potential cross-examination questions the crown could use. I am very proud to say that two of my questions were used in the actual cross-examination. I was also involved in witness preparation of a Toronto police officer who was the arresting officer.
This experience was invaluable in gaining a deep insight as to how the other side of the coin holds its value in the legal system.
